PIKACHU’S HAS A NAME?! | Who’s that Pokemon? Its ******!

Advertisements

In a recent discovery that has caught many Pokémon fans off guard, it has been uncovered that Ash Ketchum’s beloved Pikachu had an actual name. Throughout the expansive Pokémon series, the unbreakable bond between Ash and Pikachu has remained a cornerstone, since the first episode of the Pokémon anime. Ash has always addressed his loyal companion simply as “Pikachu,” like any other trainer traditionally would refer to their Pokémon.

However, a interesting discovery to this customary practice came to light in the third volume of the Pokémon manga, The Electric Tale of Pikachu, which non-sequent, mirrors the Pokémon: Indigo League and Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands seasons of the anime. As published by ResetEra user Taco_Human, the manga unveils a scene where Ash reminisces about the names he has bestowed upon his Pokémon, including Pikachu who he affectionately name him “Jean Luc Pikachu,” a playful homage to the esteemed Jean Luc Picard from the revered Star Trek franchise.

Picture panel from The Electric Tale of Pikachu

further emphasis the Star Trek homage, the manga portrays Pikachu adorned with a Star Trek insignia upon its chest. Pokémon fans are debating weather or not the name is canon. The answer? Yes and No.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu is a four-volume Pokémon manga series created and illustrated by Toshihiro Ono. Originally serialized in Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special in 1998, its a loose adaptation of the Pokémon anime, incorporating unique elements and alterative storylines. Its character and Pokémon designs are not based on Ken Sugimori’s original artwork, giving fans a brand new look to both characters and the Pokémon from illustrator, Toshihiro Ono.

The Electric Tale Of Pikachu Comic Books by VIZ Media

The four-volume manga is officially part of the Pokémon franchise. However, due to notable differences between the manga and anime series, it is considered more of a “gag” work. In other words, while it’s an official part of the franchise, it’s not to be taken as seriously as canon material. Additionally, the manga includes scenes that may seem out of place in comparison to the anime series.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu V. Anime Series

Here is a list of the differences between the manga and anime series,

Character Portrayals:

  • While the core characters remain consistent with the anime, there are significant variations in their depictions. Notably, Ash often travels solo, with Misty and Brock occasionally popping in throughout the manga.
  • Several characters, including Ash, own Pokémon that differ from their anime counterparts. For instance, Ash’s Fearow.

Plot Differences

  • Some storylines from the anime are adapted for the manga but undergo alterations. For example, in “Play Misty For Me,” Ash’s battle with Misty for the Cascade Badge occurs, but instead of a traditional battle, Misty challenges Ash to retrieve his hat from her rather than a traditional battle.
  • Characters like Sabrina and Damian are portrayed differently in the manga. Sabrina is depicted as kind and caring, contrary to her cold demeanor in anime (maybe towards the end of “Haunter versus Kadabra” ep). Similarly, Damian undergoes a personality shift, becoming a nicer person who retrieves his Charmander after recovering from a coma.

Unique Elements

  • The manga introduces Gary Oak having a sister named May Oak.
  • Notably, Jessie and James are confirmed as a couple in the manga, ultimately marrying by the end of volume four.
  • Captured Pokémon are assigned ranks based on rarity, ranging from Rank D as the most common to Rank A as the rarest.
  • Ash’s attire varies throughout the manga, showcasing different clothing styles over time.
  • Ash’s Pikachu has a name, Jean Luc Pikachu.

There you have it! The name “Jean Luc Pikachu” is officially stated in a ‘gag’, Pokémon work, but its not canon at all. The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga offers a different perspective, if not, unique take on the Pokémon anime series. Adding further intrigue, manga itself was highly controversial due to its sexual content and character designs by Toshihiro Ono in the original Japanese release. It lead to censorship in the English version (Viz Media) and other translations. The changes involved altering characters’ appearances and removing scenes with mature themes, indicating differences in censorship across translations. Below are examples of the questionable artwork.

New POKEMON App Records You While You Sleep! | Pokemon Sleep

Advertisements

The New Pokémon app, Pokémon Sleep, records and analyzes your sleep patterns and behavior. Released on July 19th, the app has gained popularity among Pokémon fans. Its cute characters and gameplay make it a great addition to those who play Pokémon Go!

Pokémon Sle…zzzz

Professor Neroli

The premise of the game is to help Professor Neroli, a Pokémon sleep analyst, collect sleeping data from various Pokémon to unlock the mystery behind Snorlax’s ‘mysterious power to put Pokémon around them [Snorlax] to sleep!”

Pokémon Sleep is supposed to help improve your sleeping habits outside the gameplay. The app records and measures your sleep; The longer you sleep, the higher your score in-game. You can use these scores to rank up your research and help Professor Neroli with his work. Together you can unlock Snorlax’s mysterious power. The app uses real-time data to determine your sleep habits and hours slept. Real-time dates are used to determine much time you’ve spent researching different Snorlaxs in various locations throughout the game.

Pokémon Sleep encourages its player to sleep earlier, wake up in the morning, and have something to look forward to! Your sleep is classified into three sleep styles; dozing, snoozing, or slumbering. Different Pokémon will generate next to Snorlax in the morning, with a similar sleeping style you were classified for the night. You can use the surrounding Pokémon to analyze those their sleeping habits and continue researching Snorlax’s power. All sleeping data is recorded in your “sleep style dex.”

The app also allows players to set sleep reminders and alarms in addition to a soothing, soft melody to help player sleep.

POKEMON GO PLUS +

Improving your sleep habits with Pokémon Sleep is easier and cuter when used with a Pokémon Go Plus device. The Pokémon GO Plus device will use Bluetooth Low Energy technology to link with Pokémon Sleep. Hold the device’s central button when it’s time for bed, place it by your pillow, and then sleep. Not only will Pokémon GO Plus + help measure your sleep data, but Pikachu’s familiar voice can give you cute prompts when it’s time to wake up or go to sleep.

If you’re reading this at the time of publication, you’ll benefit from Pokémon Sleep, or if you’re reading this during the day, perhaps a nap? Nether way, you’ll have fun helping Professor Neroli analyze all the cute, sleeping Pokémon! Try Pokémon Sleep, now available on Android and iOS.

NEW Pokemon Series Trailer

Advertisements

It is shocking to think that, after 25 years, Ash Ketchum will no longer be the face of the Pokemon Anime series. As covered in our article back in December, The Pokemon Company announced Ash Ketchum’s departure from the anime series shortly after achieving his long dream of becoming a Pokemon Master in the 42nd episode of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys.

The New Pokemon Leads

Meet Liko, Roy, and their partner Pokemon, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Liko and Ray are set to star in a brand new Pokemon series set to air in April 2023, alongside a new Pokemon Professor, Friede, and his partner Pokemon, Captain Pikachu.

LIKO

Described as “The girl with the awe-inspiring pendant.”, Liko has a crystal-like pendant that seems to have some power, hinting at a possible connection between the pendent itself and certain Pokemon. Maybe it can produce a rare, special ability? Could the pendant have something to do with Terapagos’ small hexagonal protrusion on the center of its shell or Ogerpon’s crystal-like object on its mask?

ROY

Roy is described as “the boy with the mysterious Poke Ball” Could this be old, ancient technology? New, secret technology? Something made by Friede, perhaps…?

FRIEDE & CAPT. PIKACHU

Not much is known of Professor Friede and his Pokemon, Captain Pikachu. They seem laid back but ready to fight if given no choice. Based on the trailer, Professor Friede is passionate about his work as a Pokemon researcher.

The New Trailer

There is no exact title for this new series; however, according to the newly released trailer, the series is set to air on April 14th in Japan. No word yet, on its English dub or cast. Watch the trailer below for a sneak peek at the upcoming journey, new villains, and familiar faces from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

What do you guys think of the new series without Ash? Will you be watching? We’d love to hear from you; Comment your opinions below!

Advertisements

The Pokemon Company announced its next Pokemon anime series, and for the first time in 25 years, Ash Ketchum and Pikachu will not be the main characters.

A commemorative episode set to air on December 23rd in honor of their 25-year-old Journey. The final episode featuring Ash and Pikachu will air on January 13th, 2023, with a brand new Pokemon series set to air sometime in April 2023.

The new series will feature new main characters, Liko and Roy. Their journey is set to begin alongside their Paldea starter Pokémon, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Sarah Natochenny, took to social media to express her love for the character and fans after voicing Ash for 15 years, from 2006 – 2022.
