NEOPETS Debuts at LACC 2023 | INTERVIEW

Advertisements

For over 25 years, Neopets has taught adults to care for virtual pets online. It’s one of the few games played exclusively on the internet, alongside Club Penguin and Gaia Online. Developed by Adam and Donna Powell, Neopets revolves around Neopia, where users care for and play with Neopets.

In comparison to Japan’s Tamagotchi, Neopets was solely online. Adam and Donna Powell created Neopets to entertain college students and generate advertising revenue. By the end of 1999, Neopets had over 600,000 registered users. From 1999 to 2005, Neopets was independently owned until Viacom purchased it for $160 million. Shortly after, Adam and Donna left the company due to creative differences.

In 2014, JumpStart Games bought Neopets. In 2017, JumpStart Games was acquired by the Chinese company NetDragon. Under this new management, new material was produced for the first time since the JumpStart purchase.

Currently, after a failed attempt to create a 3D version with NFTs called Neopets Meta, Neopets is led by former Neopets Meta CEO Dominic Law. Neopets is now independently owned by World of Neopia, Inc. Since 2023, the new team has been revitalizing Neopets with a new homepage and a mobile game, Neopets: Tales of Dacardia, among other upcoming updates.

At Los Angeles Comic Con 2023, I had the pleasure of speaking with Casey Sinclair, Project Manager and Senior Writer at World of Neopia, Inc. We discussed the newly released Neopets: Tales of Dacardia and reminisced about Neopets. Please note that this interview was conducted on December 3, 2023, so some information may already be outdated.

NEOPETS Interview with Casey Sinclair

Krystal Kitsune interviews Casey Sinclair at Los Comic Con 2023

Krystal: I’m here at LA Comic Con 2023, and I’m here at the NEOPET booth where they’re celebrating their 25th year anniversary. And I’m here with Casey. You are the senior writer and project manager, correct?

Casey Sinclair: Yeah, I work with a marketing team. My TNT (The Neopets Team) handle is TNTOneOfTwelve. You probably haven’t seen me. I’m not super active on the forums, but behind the scenes, work with a marketing team, work with narrative, work in licensing. And we’re really just here to grab the brand and really just engage with the community. We love our fans. We’ve got such an amazing reception here. It’s really great to just see people’s reactions with this amazing IP.

Krystal: -And at LA Comic Con, no less, you’re not only here celebrating the 25th anniversary, it’s also Neopet’s debut at La Comic Con, correct?

Casey Sinclair: This is our first LA Comic Con presence. We did San Diego and New York last year, but we figured, ‘yeah, we should show up at LA and see our fans in the Southern California area’.

Krsytal: We were discussing earlier about the positive reputation of Neopets and the longtime fans who played, such as myself, who played a long time ago, and now fast forward 25 years later, the Neopet brand is still alive, but some fans might be unaware of the, shall we say, rebranding of Neopets. Can you go into detail with that?

Casey Sinclair: Yeah, for sure. So I think it’s interesting in seeing people’s reactions today. We get everything from “Neopets?!”, “Oh, my God, this was so amazing to play in my childhood”, “You guys are still around?” “25 years?! you’re older than I am!” to, “oh my, Neopets! Are they still alive?” And we say, “yeah, they’re starving, but they’re still alive”, and I think that shows that there’s such a positive memory in the cultural consciousness of Neopets. People look at the logo on our booth and they just unlock those kind of core memories of Neopets. I think that’s what we’re about in terms of celebration, 25 years to speak to kind of the revitalization of the brand. So we have new leadership as of July of this year [2023]. And we’re really aiming to make a big push in terms of content, in terms of merch, in terms of engaging with the community and what the community has been asking for, fixing the site, introducing awesome new merchandise, introducing new plots. We have The Void Within plot coming next year [2024] and really trying to, like you said, bring those people back who may not be aware that Neopets is still alive in kicking.

Krystal: Are there any upcoming projects that you’re allowed to speak on? I know that the new CGI sort of game in the works, and I think it’s on the website. Is there something you can talk about that?

Casey Sinclair: Yeah. So, World of Neopets, we announced that back in July. It’s going to be a mobile game, kind of think hybrid, kind of animal Crossing, pet Sim style game. I have to say, with a disclaimer, it’s still tentatively in development. But we’re really trying to kind of have a different style of Neopets game where you can kind of be in the guise of a Neopet and kind of interact with Neopia, go around the world. But we still have a heavy focus on Neopets.com that’s like, mentioned the plot coming out next year.

We had almost every year during the 2000s, a plot come out that was so integral to Neopets, the storytelling. Right? And I work with a narrative team, amazing group of people. The storytelling was really important, and so we kind of wanted to bring it back to that. We’re also excited in that last year, in 2022, we launched Fairy’s Hope, a match three game. We kind of want to have something for everyone. But I was telling you earlier, it’s really important for us to have kind of this unified universe of Neopets games where people that want to play Neopets.com, we’re faithful to that. We support that. We introduce new content for that. We fix things that need to be fixed for that. But then anyone that wants to branch out and experience Neopia in new ways, they can do that as well.

We have Advent calendar going out right now that’s on the site. We have a little fun, little teaser at the end of that for people that played the fairy festival event earlier. We had a little comic at the end. Maybe they could expect something, who knows? And then we’ve already said in our live AMAs that happen every month, UC pets coming. Keep your eye out for that on the site. And then also, the last kind of pillar in our group of games is Island Builders. And Island Builders has been out for a while, but we have a closed beta going on right now where we’re prepping for the relaunch of Island Builders early next year. And we’re really excited about that new build. So revamped again, like, to scratch every itch for everyone that wants to interact with Neopia in different ways.

Krystal Kitsune interviews Casey Sinclair at Los Comic Con 2023

Krystal: To wrap this up, because I know you guys are busy for sure, it’s not only the games that are coming out, right, because at this convention itself, you guys had a panel in where you guys discussed a graphic novel. Can you go into detail with that?

Casey Sinclair: Yeah, so that’s only the games. We are partnered with Andrews McNeil that came out with our amazing cookbook earlier this year. Personally, one of my favorite products that we’ve ever come out with, it’s so faithful to the esthetic, the vibrant kind of pastel colors of early Neopets. So they have graphic novels in the works. We have our calendar here, our 2024 calendar. We designed that in house–

Krystal: –which, let me just add, seeing a Neopet calendar for 2024, it’s….amazing!

Casey Sinclair: Well, we wanted to kind of, like, pay homage to our 25th birthday. So we’re celebrating 25 years of Neopets. Our 25th birthday is in 2024, November 15.

Krystal: WOOO! Congratulations!!

Casey Sinclair: We’ve had 25 years in Neopets. We want to have another 25 years. So in addition to the games, we have the novels coming out, we have new products coming out. We have our neo hoods here today, new plush in the works. Can’t speak too much on that, but we’re listening to the community about all these kinds of things and kind of really want to, again, pay respects to the community and what the community has been asking for.

Krystal: All right, Casey, thank you so much for helping us catch up on Neopets on the 25th anniversary!

Casey Sinclair: Thank you so much and we want to just say a special shout out; Thanks for the interview, and thanks for our community for being here, and we’re happy to be at LA Comic Con!

Miraculous Ladybug The Movie | REVIEW

Advertisements

When “Miraculous Ladybug” first debuted in 2015, it instantly captured the attention of anime enthusiasts and garnered a significant cult following. This captivating animated series was brought to life through the collaboration of ZAGtoon and Method Animation, with the renowned Japanese animation company, Toei Animation, serving as a co-producer. Thomas Astruc, a talented cartoonist, developed the character of Ladybug and played an integral role in shaping the TV series alongside Jeremy Zag, the CEO, director, and producer of ZAGtoon.

Miraculous Ladybug” revolves around the lives of two teenagers, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste. When duty calls, they transform into the fearless superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir. Together, they valiantly protect the city from the clutches of supervillains. While the series was initially intended to be in a 2D anime style, it ultimately evolved into a CGI production, a decision made by the French producers. However, fans can still find the original anime-style promotional OVA video on YouTube, animated by Toei Animation.Over time, “Miraculous Ladybug” has cultivated a devoted fandom, including passionate cosplayers and artists who proudly call themselves “Miraculers.” The series has expanded into a successful media franchise, encompassing comics, a web series, novels, video games, a manga series, and most recently, the highly anticipated motion picture, “Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie“. With its growing popularity and array of merchandise, “Miraculous Ladybug” has firmly established itself as an enchanting world that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

The Highly Anticipated Motion Picture Film

Embark on a captivating cinematic experience as you delve into this highly anticipated animated film of the year! The film follows the thrilling journey of two teenagers, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, who must uncover the truth about themselves and harness their extraordinary powers to safeguard the illustrious city of Paris. The film is a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated Miraculous Ladybug fandom while appealing to newcomers.

The film briefly introduces the Miraculous and showcases the various Miraculous, leaving room for potential future film projects. As an origin story, the film explores the beginnings of our main protagonists, Marinette and Adrien, and their journey to becoming superheroes and reveals how they obtained their Miraculous. The film touches on universal teenage themes of courage and selflessness, capturing the challenges of adolescence, such as fitting in and facing one’s fear.

It becomes apparent that the film’s narrative adheres to a relatively straightforward and predictable trajectory, albeit keeping in mind its intended target audience encompassing the younger demographic. However, the animation compensates for its anticipated plot developments. Distinct from its television counterpart, where character portrayal tends to lean towards stylized plasticity, the film’s creative team dedicatedly strived for meticulous detailing and hyper-realistic verisimilitude in rendering both Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste. Their meticulously crafted appearances feature nuanced facial expressions, lustrous hair, and mesmeric eyes. Noteworthy locations such as The Cheng’s boulangerie (French for “bakery”) and Adrien’s mansion beautifully showcase opulent French architectural design and, in certain instances, timeworn interiors, lending an air of “lived-in” authenticity.

In addition, characters’ facial expressions play a crucial role in conveying their emotions and setting the overall mood of the scenes; this is further supported by the production team, animating characters with detailed and realistic skin textures, making them come to life and feel more like lifelike on the screen.

The animators strived for realism, at least more than the TV series. An interesting and subtle highlight is that the animators animated the characters’ hair in various directions, ensuring the hair is not perfectly styled. By adding intersecting strands and different hair directions, the animators created a more natural and authentic look for the characters, once again bringing them to life on the screen.

While there is no official confirmation, avid followers of the series may find several sequences within the film that bear a striking resemblance to scenes from an unaired 2D anime-style ‘OVA Promotional Video’ dating back to 2015. The uncanny similarities between the two raise the possibility that the film’s storyline was initially intended to serve as the introductory episode for the projected 2D anime series. Of course, the speculation surrounding this potential connection is pure conjecture, as the 2D anime iteration never came to fruition, and ZAG has never mentioned the 2D project since.

The Music

One prominent aspect of the film that deserves special mention is its captivating musical score. It becomes evident from the very beginning that the melodic voices of the main characters differ from their spoken voices, adding an intriguing layer to the overall experience. Marinette is brought to life through the talented voice acting of Cristina Vee, while the prolific Bryce Papenbrook voices the charming Adrien. The singing voice of Marinette is portrayed by the French singer Lou Jean while Drew Ryan Scott performs Adrien’s singing voice with music composed by CEO and film director Jeremy Zag himself with assistance from Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey.

Noam Kaniel, the talented cartoon music composer, was surprisingly not involved in the film’s musical score. Despite his previous success composing the theme song for the TV series, his unique musical style was unfortunately absent from the film’s soundtrack.

The Plot

The film’s storyline might be predictable for more experienced viewers, but it remains highly enjoyable and entertaining. While the film does contain a few gaps in the plot, it serves as a compelling introduction to the TV series. Towards the end, there are some noticeable inconsistencies when compared to the TV show’s plotline. Nevertheless, with a bit of imagination, it gives room for speculation and wonder about what might have occurred after the film’s iconic and intense climax. It is not surprising that there is a romantic element between Ladybug and Cat Noir, although the TV series does not delve deeply into it in the first two seasons. However, the film takes the opportunity to explore their relationship in greater detail. Every emotional response from the characters is given careful attention, ensuring that romantic and conflicting feelings resonate with the audience.

Now on NETFLIX!

The movie premiered in Paris, France, on June 11th of this year with a limited release in theaters worldwide. As reported by the French magazine Paris Match, the film was produced with a budget of €80 million (or about $86 million), making it the second most expensive French film in history, second only to the 2017 movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

If you are captivated by this review, prepare to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Miraculous Ladybug, as both the captivating TV series and thrilling film are now streaming on Netflix! Be ready to join forces with the courageous heroes of Paris as Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste transform into the extraordinary Ladybug and Cat Noir. Together, they stand as beacons of hope, defending the beautiful city Paris from the clutches of menacing supervillains orchestrated by the nefarious Hawk Moth. Totally Spies Interview – 20 Years Later

Anime-Inspired cartoons

Many cartoons of the day were an introduction to the world of anime, even if those series were not considered traditional anime. Wakfu, Martin Mystery, Code Lyoko & Totally Spies were all considered anime-influenced or anime-inspired cartoons, often produced in Italy or France. Some of us fondly remember these cartoons, even when we were unaware of what anime or cosplay was. Today we are focusing on one of these series, Totally Spies.

Totally Spies Season 2 Promo Image

Remembering Totally Spies

Totally Spies is a series that has gathered a large fan base throughout the year, since it first aired in 2001 on ABC Family. Often described as ‘Charlie’s Angels for kids”, the series revolved around three high school girls who would be literally sucked into a world of evil plots, goofy evil villains, and of course, boy problems. Popularity grew as the seasons passed due to the show’s witty humor and intriguing missions. In 2009, the series had its first motion picture which had a limited theatrical release in the U.S., followed by a 6th season in 2013.

Exclusive Code Lyoko Interview With Sebastian Davin – The Subdigitals

Advertisements

Code Lyoko is a fantastic, french produced series that mixes CGI and 2D animation. Often described as French anime, the series remains popular in the U.S., with an active a cult following. Although the series came to an end in 2012, fans are still sharing and creating fan-made content. However,as the series came to a end, fans are searched for information on the show itself. Who created it, how was it made, and who worked on it? And who is sebastian Davin? No matter what department a staff member worked on, fans want to know.

Code Lyoko Season 1 – 3 Character Designs and outfits

Some have even contacted producers, animators, music composers, and voice actors, myself included, who worked on the show. During the pandemic, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing French-based actress Barbara Scaff, the voice of Ulrich Stern.

Code Lyoko Season 4

During the show’s 4th season, MoonScoop, the producers began to promote the show with an English version of the show’s music album. The original album had been released in France a year earlier. Although the album was not a U.S. sensation, it was an instant hit among CL fans once it was released. Using the album’s first track Planet Net, MoonScoop released an AMV that featured the show’s fictional band, The Subdigitals.

For a long time, fans wondered who the voice behind the music in the album was. Who made fans play the album non-stop? Lyoko warriors and dear readers, let me introduce you to musician Sebastian Davin.

Sebastian Davin Joins The Subdigitals

Getting in touch with modern and current subcultures, in the newest trailer, lead characters Yakko, Wakko and Dot are shown with anime style animation, leaving fans to wonder what type of skit is in store in this new series.

Although this is not the first time we’ve seen anime style animation in western TV shows as seen in The Amazing World of Gumball, this is the VERY first time its been used in a revival for a series that’s been off air for 22 years.

A24 Checks in at The Hazbin Hotel

Advertisements

New York based film distributor and TV production company, A24 has announced on Friday that it will be picking up Vivienne Medrano’s The Hazbin Hotel for a full television series.

A24 has produced critically acclaimed films such as Room staring Brie Larson and The Disaster Artist staring James Franco. A24 has also produced numerous hit comedy series such as 2 Dope Queens, and Eric Andre: Legalize Everything.

A24 have not release anymore information regarding the show’s production nor its estimated release date.

3 months before the pilot episode was officially released, we had the honor of speaking with Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano during Anime Expo 2019 regarding the show’s characters, merchandise and its future, watch below:

We would like to congratulate Vivienne Medrano and her team for their hard work and well deserved, upcoming TV series. We hope that Hazbin Hotel keeps on developing into more than a TV series (Maybe a film?) and wish her and her team the best.

Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer | Easter Eggs & Cameos That You Might’ve Missed

Advertisements

Dr. Robotnik & Grounder

Those who watched Saturday morning cartoons (aka SatAM) in the ’90s may remember Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Underground. Garry Chalk was one of many voice actors from these shows, voicing Grounder in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr.Robotnik in Sonic Underground, a dystopian version of the Sonic the Hedgehog TV universe.

Garry can be seen among the government officials sitting down during a meeting discussing the ‘anomaly‘ detected. It is unclear if Garry Chalk’s character in the film is more than just a minor cameo, or if there’s more than meets the eye.

Hill Top Zone

A road sign with ‘Hill Top Zone‘ can be seen seconds into the trailer. Hill Top Zone is the fifth Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The level is most notable for its geographical location, amidst the high peaks of West Side Island, which makes one wonder of its location within the film.

Green Hill Zone

This one’s pretty in your face. Right at the beginning of the trailer, Green Hill Zone can be seen right before Sonic travels into our world. It is unclear if the film will explore more of this zone (or any other) as a setting.

Sonic The Hedgehog Title Screen Emblem

The title screen emblem from Sonic The Hedgehog can be seen on Sonic’s headband. The game was originally released in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive (Japan) and quickly became one of the most recognizable logos among hardcore Sonic fans.

Warp Rings

Many who played Sonic The Hedgehog may remember the giant ring that would appear at the end of a level and teleport the player to special stages. The film drew inspiration from this, having sonic apparently teleport from one part of the world to another. Variations of this ability have been shown throughout the games and TV series.

Misa Amane (Death Note) and Fabiola Iglesias (Black Lagoon)

Among voice actor cameos is Shannon Chan-Kent, a Canadian based voice actress, who has voiced numerous notable characters such as Misa Amane from the hit anime series, Death Note and Fabiola Iglesias from Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail.

She is also the singing voice of Pinkie pie, Sonata Dusk and speaking voice of Silver Spoon in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Jeff Fowler’s Gopher Broke cameo

This film will feature the theatrical, directorial debut of Jeff Fowler, who previously worked on Gopher Broke, a 2004 short, animated film written and directed by Jeff Fowler.

The short film follows a hungry gopher who hatches a clever plan to get a quick snack but discovers that even the best-laid plans can go udderly awry. The opening title can be seen during Sonic’s exploration of the motel room.

Egg-O-Matic

A more modern and more ‘realistic‘ version of the Egg-O-Matic can be seen through half of the trailer. Although it has not been confirmed that this is, in fact, a representation of the Egg-O-Matic, it does share some similarities.

Blur Studio

Blur Studio, although its name is not a direct reference to Sonic’s nickname “The Blue Blur“, the studio has had ties to the Sonic The Hedgehog games before the film. Blur Studios produced several CGI animated cutscenes for Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic The Hedgehog 2006.

According to an interview, by Di-O-Matic, Inc, with then Animation supervisor Leo Santos, “One particular challenge we had on the Sonic opening cinematic (and the Shadow the Hedgehog cinematics) is the fact that Sonic’s mouth is sometimes on the side, sometimes on the middle.” With Blur Studio’s experience with animating Sonic in the past, why was there a need to redesign?

Doctor Ovi Kintobor or Dr. Ivo Kintobor

This one is probably a long stretch but, Jim Carrey’s portrayal of a ‘thin‘ Robotnik is similar in appearance (somewhat) to that of Doctor Ovi Kintobor, a character that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions in the UK. The character served as a background origin story to the present day Eggman. In other comic series published by Archie Comics, Carrey’s portrayal is similar to that of, alternate universe Robotnik, Dr. Ivo Kintobor, who is kind, generous and friendly.

Needless to say, there will probably be more hidden gems within the movie. Be on the lookout and mark your calendars for February 14th, 2020! Watch the newly released trailer here:

Time to CHECK IN | Hazbin Hotel

Advertisements

The long wait is finally over! HAZBIN HOTEL made its premiere on Oct 28th!

The pilot episode “That’s Entertainment” was released on YouTube by its creator, Vivienne Medrano (Vivziepop). The episode was an instant hit, getting over 7M views in nearly two weeks. During an interview we had with Vivienne Medrano, she spoke about having the series air on a major studio network, depending on how well the pilot episode is received and what type of deal they are offered.

Though the pilot episode became an instant hit among fans, the future of the series is still up in the air. Medrano and her team want to develop an entire season of Hazbin Hotel but for this, as Medrano puts it in our interview, they would need a bigger budget, suggesting a Kickstart campaign to help create an entire season.
